Thursday Night

Wow… what a full day we have had.
We began with a very interesting talk by the Dean of Bethlehem Bible College (BBC). He gave us a tour of their facility with a lot of good information. It is amazing what they are doing in this area not only through the students, but in helping the people of Bethlehem. He especially has a burden for the children here. They are in the process of building a student center behind the College. They also run the “Shepherds Society” which helps with food, clothing and medical help for local residents.
We then had a session with Salim Munayer the Academic Dean of BBC. He spoke to us on the topic, “Theology of the Land.” We were surprised to find that he spoke for two hours. It was so interesting and thought-provoking. A lot to absorb.
Our final speaker was President of BBC, Bishara Awad. What an amazing man and yet I found him quite humble and unassuming. His story is amazing and all that God has accomplished through him is all around us here at BBC.
Tonight we had a wonderful time with five students from BBC. They were all around the age of 20 and had grown up in Bethlehem. To hear of their life as a Palestinian was very educational. The statement that struck me was that life here is like living in a cage. It was also interesting to hear what they think our view of them is. When asked if there is anything they would like to say to America one girl said, “Get our of your shell and look at us.” It was a great evening and we arranged to go with them for dinner on Sunday night.
The other excitement of the day was the visit of President Bush. The street in front of BBC was blocked off all morning and into the afternoon. There were men on the roofs down the street with guns and many soldiers on the corner. A number of the group walked down the sidewalk to where it was thought his motorcade would come through. They were told to turn around and go back. In the end, we were in a session when we heard helicopters. We were later told that Bush did not come in a motorcade but by helicopter. I’m sure those of you reading this know more than we do about the visit. It just seemed funny to us to be here on this very street on the very day our President came for a visit. I’m sure as the days go by, we will hear more of the opinions of people here.
Well, that is all for today. A long day, an interesting day and one that we all end with much thinking to do.
The team sends their greetings.
Love to All,
The Israel Team
