The Truth of Ukraine’s History
Posted by Alongside Missions
While history has acknowledged the atrocities against Jews under Hitler and the Nazis, most of us have never heard of the crimes committed against Ukrainians by the government that ruled them for most of the 20th century. The truth of these terrible events needs to be heard. Following is an eye-opening account of Ukraine’s history from our friend Nina in Ukraine…
In Ukraine, on November 24th, we had a Day of Memory of the victims of the false starvation in 1932-33. It was 75 years ago, but only now we are getting to know the truth. For our President it is very, very important. He wants all countries to admit this historical fact of planned genocide against Ukrainians. He speaks about it all over Europe. Next year is the year of memory of those people, who died from hunger in Ukraine, when the Soviet government was taking all food from Ukrainian families. It lasted from April 1932 until November 1933. 17 people were dying every minute, 1,000 people every hour and 24,000 a day. For 17 months approximately 14,000,000 of Ukrainian population died. And yesterday [November 24], most of the TV programs showed us documentary films about those terrible events, when people, just to survive, ate their own children…
And before we were taught that soviet life was the best life in the world — and we believed it. In fact, other countries did not know what really was happening here. Ukraine was totally isolated from the world. And in that time, food was exported from Ukraine, from the wheat they were making alcohol.
People who survived say that hunger was much more terrible than the War. It’s also a part of our history…
